Trinity Street, Burges, Hales Street and Palmer Lane

We are looking at ways to improve the city centre to make it a more enjoyable place to visit.

We know there is a lot of traffic in and around Trinity Street, Burges, Hales Street and Palmer Lane making it tricky for pedestrians, especially those with mobility issues, to navigate.

To help with these issues we will introduce a busgate on Hales Street from mid-July as shown on the map.

Map of new bus gate on Hales Street, which will restrict access to Hales Street, Trinity Street, Palmer Lane and Burges, between 10am and 6pm Monday to Saturday.

This means that access to Hales Street, Trinity Street, Burges and Palmer Lane will only be allowed for buses, cycles, taxis, private hire vehicles, or permit holders between 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. There will be no restrictions on Sundays.

To access the restricted areas beyond the bus gate, residents and businesses will need to apply for a permit, including for deliveries. Local people and businesses will be contacted soon to advise them on how to apply for a permit.

We will make the changes under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, which means that the changes can be in place for up to 18 months. During this time, we will carefully monitor traffic and pedestrian flows and listen to feedback before deciding if the changes should become permanent.

We expect these changes to improve air quality in the city centre and make it a safer and more enjoyable place for local people and visitors. In turn, we hope this will be good for businesses.
