Delivering a More Sustainable City

The revised draft SPD sets out Coventry City Council's commitment to achieve greater levels of sustainable development through the planning process.

Objectives

The purpose of this SPD is to:

1. explain the implementation of Coventry Development Plan Policy  OS4;

2. indicate how sustainability requirements can be met;

3. help those submitting planning applications to determine how the sustainability of their proposals might be improved; and

4. show how travel plans can be successfully developed and implemented.

Key Requirements

The SPD is based on seven key sustainable themes. These include:

• Energy;
• Materials;
• Contaminated Land;
• Travel;
• Waste & Recycling;
• Water; and
• Air Quality.

Applicants for planning permission are encouraged to consider the themes and find ways of meeting each key requirement in their development schemes.  In doing so, developers will contribute towards meeting the city's overall targets as set out in the Council's Climate Change Strategy.

Consultation

Comments were sought on a revised draft SPD for a seven week period (18 August 2008 - 6 October 2008). An accompanying Sustainability Appraisal report was produced which thoroughly assessed the revised draft SPD against environmental, social and economic objectives.
 
An associated good practice guide was produced to show how various built developments across the city have incorporated sustainable building design and construction techniques. A separate consultation statement set out the details of the initial consultation process in the preparation of the revised draft SPD. A single page statement of matters provided key details about the consultation process.

What Happens Next?

The Council will consider all representations made as part of the 2008 consultation process. The revised draft SPD will then be amended and it is expected to be adopted later this year. A representations statement, adoption statement and the adopted SPD will be published on these pages following adoption.
