Advanced Cycle Training - Gold Courses

This page gives details of advanced cycle training courses Coventry City Council provide.

Course enrolment

If your child is looking to increase their skills on the road then the 'Advanced Cycling Skills Course' provided by Coventry City Council may be perfect for them. This is Gold Level and meets Level 3 on the Bikeability Scheme run by Cycling England.

However, to enrol on this course:

  • Each trainee must have completed the equivalent to Bikeability Level 2 training, usually in the form of our 'Introduction to On-Road Cycling' Silver course.
  • Each trainee must have a road-worthy bicycle meaning they must have two functional brakes.
  • Each trainee must have a fully functional gear mechanism and have a good understanding of how to use them.
  • Each trainee must wear cycle helmet.

Course content

The trainees will recap on the Level 2 and learn how to improve their cycling skills by completing a journey of at least 8 miles with us. Trainees will learn about:

  • How to use cycle lanes
  • Guarding your lane
  • Road Signs and what they mean
  • How to complete a turn at a road traffic island
  • How to complete a turn at a set of traffic signals
  • How to use their gears to improve general control of their bicycle

Children will be expected to have practiced and honed their skills attained in the Silver Standard On Road Cycle Training Course.  As the course content refers to the correct use of gears, all bikes should be equipped with a correctly functioning gear mechanism.  Provision of a cycle helmet is also essential.

The course starts at 10:00am and finishes at 4:00pm.  Between 12 noon and 12:30pm there will be a lunch break, so children will need to bring a packed lunch.  The course begins in the cycle parking and seating area on the corner or Earl Street and Little Park Street, opposite the Council House.  It finishes at Coventry Transport Museum, where the children will be given a chance to take a special tour of the highly interactive Cyclopedia Gallery.  Children should be collected no later than 4:00pm from the Transport Museum.  If you can arrive at 3:45pm it will give you a chance to join in all the fun when we have our end of course celebration and give out certificates and badges.  For pick up by car, the most convenient parking is in Bishop Street opposite the Royal Mail sorting office.

A certificate, badge and bike sticker are provided for those completing the course.
