Earlsdon Park achieves excellent rating
Earlsdon Park - a new £110 million development in Coventry - has received the highest possible accolade for sustainable office accommodation.
The mixed use development – comprising 434 residential apartments as well as high quality office accommodation, restaurants and bars will also be home to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) - the first Government department to relocate to Coventry following the recommendation of the Lyons report last year.
Working in partnership with Coventry City Council, the project is led by Birmingham based MCD Developments - specialist developers in sustainable urban regeneration.
Andrew Hall, acting chief executive at QCA, said: “A major condition of QCA's in taking space in Earlsdon Park was that our building should be sustainable. I am delighted that MCD has achieved an Excellent rating from the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) for the low environmental impact and sustainable design of our new Earlsdon Park offices. QCA has made a commitment to make a positive contribution to regenerating the local area and to respecting the environment. The Excellence BRE rating for our new building is a milestone towards achieving these aims.”
Chris Gee, BREEAM assessor, said: “The commendable score of 74.45 per cent represents the team effort that went into addressing environmental issues on this project and in particular the coordinated effort made between MCD and their contractors John Sisk and Son Ltd.
“Particular
highlights were the 100 per cent score achieved in the management section reflecting a strong site performance. The design
team's approach scored 92 per cent in the Health and Wellbeing section due to the provision of a high quality environment
for building occupants and 83 per cent in the Water section for water conserving measures. Carbon Dioxide emissions were predicted
by computer modelling to be over 23 per cent less than the Building Regulation requirement. Ground source heat pumps are installed
which supply 47 per cent of total project energy demand.
“Over 70 per cent of the aggregate used was derived from
demolition arisings which were crushed on site. This tactic reduced both the amount of new aggregate and reduced the number
of vehicle movements to transport it to site through Coventry's streets”
MCD Developments specialises in creating developments that bring something unique to the city landscape. From the sympathetic restoration of listed buildings to major new build schemes, MCD are at the forefront of sustainable urban regeneration. Jennifer Price, development executive of MCD Developments, said: “It is important that not only is low impact environmental work undertaken, but that it is formally recognised in order that the benefits of such work can be highlighted to others, and then serve as a form of best practice.
The new development is a prime example of MCD’s desire to redevelop urban areas helping to create a sense of community and a place in which to live, work and enjoy.”
