Community Health Development Officers

Healthy walking.

Working in partnership with other Agencies and local people, our community health development officers provide a needs-led service that will improve the health and well-being of the communities living in Priority Neighbourhoods.

What we do:

We provide support to the local Health Action Group and work with local communities to address local health needs through a range of methods.

We consult with different groups about how best to make a difference to their health and promote healthier lifestyles such as:

  • Increasing levels of activity.
  • Reducing levels of smoking.
  • Encouraging healthier eating.

There are specific health issues associated with living in these localities, such as diabetes, stroke, asthma and low birth weight babies. We raise awareness of theses issues by:

  • Promoting key messages.
  • Working in key settings such as schools, community groups, GP's surgeries.

We support measures that will address health issues through:

  • Increased awareness of prevention and screening services.
  • Increased access to local services, including outreach or provision of transport or advocacy.
  • Signposting of services, including promoting the benefits take-up.
