Finding your way around the site
On the left hand side of every page is a menu which lists the section you are in and the categories within that section. These cateogories can be clicked on to view information.
To assist you with moving back and forth between the pages there is a "bread crumb" menu at the top of each page - this starts with 'You are in:....' so you can see the path you have followed to reach your destination and use it to revisit previous pages, (or you may prefer to use your web browser's back button.)
The information in the site is divided up into 11 main sections. These are:
Business, Community and Living, Council and Democracy, Culture and Leisure, Education and Learning, Environment, Housing, Jobs and Careers, Policing and Public Safety, Social Care and Health, Transport and Streets.
Looking for information
There are four main ways that you can find information on this web site:
1. The home page
This is the starting point of any website and a good place to begin browsing the site for information. The web address (called
URL) of Coventry City Council is www.coventry.gov.uk and when you click on this web address, it is the homepage that
will display on your screen.
Once you start to look at different parts of the site, if you want to return to the homepage, just click on the logo in the top left hand corner, or the word 'Home' in the "bread crumb" menu at the top of each page.
2. Search
Use the search box to type in your own word(s) and carry out a search for the word(s) on the website. The search box can be
found in the top right hand corner of every page. It is best to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence. If you
search for very common words or phrases, you may get some unexpected results. Choose the most relevant pages from the search
results and click on it's title to go to the page. There is also an advanced search facility available.
3. Choose a main section
eg. Business. Click on the section you want to go to at the top of the screen. Click on the topic nearest to what you want.
- Choose from the menu on the new page.
- Drill down until you find what you want.
- Or choose from the related pages in the righthand panel.
4. A - Z
The A-Z is another method for finding information on the site. It lists all the information relating to Coventry City Council
in alphabetical order. Simply click on the first initial letter of the service you require. For example, if you want to find
information on Council tax, you may choose to click on the letter 'C' for Council. Find the subject on the results page and
click on it's title to go to the page.
Underlined words:
If you see these then you can "click" on them using your mouse to reach more detailed information.
A hand appears:
If you are moving over a word, an icon or picture and a hand appears then this means that you can "click" using your mouse and you will reach more detailed information.
Downloading documents:
Various documents are available for downloading onto your own computer. These will be in one of two formats:
1. Microsoft Word document –
If you do not have a full version of Microsoft Word on your computer you will need to download the free
‘Word Viewer’ from the Microsoft site to view these documents (although most new computers that use MS Windows will already
have the viewer installed).
2. Portable Format Document (PDF) -
To display or print the document, you must download the free
Acrobat(R) Reader from the Adobe(R) web site. The Acrobat(R) Reader allows anyone to view, navigate, and print documents
in the Adobe(R) Portable Document Format (PDF). Follow the directions on the Adobe(R) site to install and configure the reader
for use with your web browser.
It is our intention to have all available documents in PDF format from this site.
