Getting married in Coventry

Coventry Register Office.

Coventry Registration Service aims to make your day a special and memorable occasion. We offer a range of wedding venues from a small intimate occasion to a large celebration.

Before you can give your Notice of Marriage (see Before getting married) you will need to decide where you want to be married. You can marry in a register office, approved premises, church or chapel in England or Wales.

Register Office

A Manor House has stood on the site where the register office is today, since 1250 and royalty owned the estate on which Cheylesmore Manor House stands. Today the gatehouse of this estate is still in use for ceremonies within the register office.

This historic listed building was sympathetically restored in the 1960s and remains the oldest building in Britain in use as a register office, providing a unique setting for couples getting married in Coventry. Read more about Coventry Register Office.

There are two impressive marriage rooms housed on the first floor. Both of the rooms are furnished to a high standard and have medieval oak beamed and vaulted ceilings.

                  the Register Office.

The largest room (pictured left) accommodates up to 50 people and has been named 'The Black Prince Room'. The room retains a wealth of original features including an impressive stone fireplace.  A winding staircase leads out from this room down to a huge oak door into a large stone flagged courtyard where a section of the city wall still remains.  A small wooden bridge within the courtyard, with the Manor House as a backdrop, provides delightful opportunities for your important photographs and memories of your special day.

The smallest of the two rooms accommodates up to 25 people; however, it does have a large step down into the room making it inaccessible for disabled visitors.  It is possible to make alternative arrangements, as we do have a ground floor room that can be used if necessary. Please contact us if you wish to discuss your personal requirements. Access to the larger room is fully accessible to disabled visitors as a lift is available and there are no steps to negotiate.

Both of the rooms provide intimate settings, music facilities and flower displays.  The smaller room allows for ceremonies to be held Monday - Friday and Saturday mornings only. Enhancements are available for these ceremonies if required e.g. additional vows and readings. The larger room provides longer time slots, enabling you to personalise your ceremony with your own choice of vows, readings, music etc and also allows the bride to be escorted into the room by someone of her choice. Any special requests can usually be catered for.  The larger room is available for ceremonies Monday - Friday, Saturday mornings and afternoons and also on a Sunday.

The fees for the use of these two rooms are as follows:-

The Black Prince Room, accommodating up to 50 people

Monday - Friday           £100

Saturday           £200          Sunday        £250

The Register Office Room, accommodating up to 25 people

Monday - Saturday a.m. only                  £40

The fee for your marriage certificate (£3.50) is additional to the above fees.

Further details of the options available for your ceremony in either of our two rooms will be given to you when you attend to give your Notice of Marriage, or by post if you live outside of Coventry and attend another office to give your notices of marriage.

If you would like to see our 'Ceremony Brochure' please either click the link or contact the office on 024 76833141/3211 or 3210 and we will be happy to post one to you. If you have any further questions you would like answered please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Please note a civil marriage cannot contain any religious aspects.

Approved Premises

As well as the historic Cheylesmore Manor House we also offer a wonderful range of venues across the city for every wedding style. Follow these links for a list of buildings registered within Coventry for civil marriage and a list of relevant fees.

To arrange a wedding at approved premises, you must first contact the venue to make provisional arrangements, if you are marrying in Coventry the venue will contact us directly to confirm availability of a Registrar for your marriage. If you are getting married at a venue out of Coventry you should contact the Register Office of the district in which the premises are located yourself to ensure that a Registrar can attend your wedding on the date and time of your choice. The venue will work with you to offer expertise and guidance, which will make your day a perfect one. We will meet with you at a convenient time at least a week before the ceremony to discuss your individual requirements and work through the legal requirements to make your marriage day truly special. Please note a civil marriage cannot contain any religious aspects.

A marriage in a church, or other religious building

If you are getting married in a Church of England you should make all of the arrangements with the minister at the church. Banns will usually be called but, if they are not called, it is necessary to give notice of marriage by Certificate without Licence in the district(s) where you both live, following the arrangements detailed under Before getting married.

If you are getting married at any other religious building which is registered for marriages (e.g. Methodist, Baptist, Sikh, Muslim, Roman Catholic etc) you must give your notice of marriage as detailed under Before getting married.

It is normally only possible to be married in a religious building which is located in the district where one or both of you live. You may, however, marry in a religious building in a district where neither of you lives if you can testify that it is your usual place of worship.

The religious building will usually have a person appointed to register your marriage. If this is not the case you must confirm with the Register Office of the district that they have a Registrar available to register your marriage.
