Neighbourhood Service Agreements in Coventry (Neighbourhood Charters)

Throughout the city and within our neighbourhoods services are delivered on a citywide basis or locally through public, private and voluntary sector organisations and community groups. Many of these services are confusing, often with standards varying across organisations and with different requirements within an area; e.g. street cleansing a shopping area more often than a suburban street. Neighbourhood Agreements are a good way of bringing together these standards around one particular theme or right across a neighbourhood for all providers and residents to share.

A Neighbourhood Agreement is a voluntary agreement between a community, the local authority and other service providers.

The ‘Your Neighbourhood Matters’ programme in Coventry enabled us to pilot neighbourhood agreements within 8 neighbourhoods defined as some of the most disadvantaged in the city. The four year programme has developed community activity around themes such as community safety, environment, and young people as decided upon by residents. Through these agreements we are already seeing improvements within neighbourhoods.
