This page gives you information about the procedure for requesting copies of certificates: birth, marriage and death.
How to get a copy certificate
If you wish to obtain a copy certificate for a birth, marriage or death that was registered in Coventry you can apply by post, telephone or in person.
Telephone applications require a card payment. Please have these details to hand when telephoning the office.
You will need to provide the following information:
- The type of certificate you are seeking: birth, marriage or death
- The name or names the certificate applies to
- The date of the event
- The place of the event
- Parents' names for a birth certificate
- Any other relevant information that may help us locate the certificate
If applying by post you will also need to include the following:
- A stamped addressed envelope
- Payment in the form of a cheque or postal order if applying by post.
If applying in person at the Register Office:
- Payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit/debit card.
- Certificates are usually ready for collection 48 hours after ordering, or they can be posted to you.
Fees
The cost of all standard birth, death and marriage certificates is £7.00. We cannot issue a certificate until we have received payment. Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to Coventry City Council.
A short birth certificate is available for £5.50. This shows the person's name, sex, date of birth and registration district of birth. The standard birth certificate also shows place of birth, parents' names and occupation of parents.
Please note that most agencies including Passports, Jobs, Saving Accounts etc., now request sight of a full birth certificate.
You should allow five working days for the return of a certificate by post. In person we are able to offer a 24 hour turn around for applications. Telephone applications will be despatched on either the same or following day, depending on the time the order is received.
