Childcare, Care, Science and Counselling Skills Courses
There is a range of health, social care and science courses covering Children's Care Learning and Development, Care (adults), Introduction to Counselling/Listening Skills and Science GCSE.
NVQs are competence-based qualifications and participants are required to produce a portfolio of evidence.
Introductory courses in childcare give an insight into work with children. Learners may then be able to progress to gain a qualification. In addition to those advertised to run in September more of these will be offered in the spring and summer terms.
The service offers units of the City and Guilds Children's Care Learning and Development Certificate. These two units are not a full qualification but give people who are not ready to undertake the NVQ an opportunity to acquire knowledge and practical experience.
Children's Care Learning and Development NVQ is for people who wish to work with children aged from 0 to 16 years in settings such as nurseries, playgroups, preschools and crèches. Level 2 is appropriate for people who work, either paid or in a voluntary capacity. People may be new to the role. Level 3 is for people who are experienced within a vocational area and whose job role calls for competence relating to a range of responsibilities.
Health and Social Care NVQ is suitable for people who work with adults in health and social care settings such as day centres, residential homes, individuals' homes and some generic areas of health. This NVQ is offered at level 2 and level 3.
Employers have an expectation that their care staff will have a level 2 qualification. The level 3 award is designed for those who have some supervisory responsibilities.
Many people are eligible to take NVQs without paying tuition fees. The Coventry Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership can also fund some learners.
Introduction to Counselling/Listening Skills is suitable for people who want to use such skills in 'helping' conversations, in voluntary, professional or other contexts.
Science GCSE is particularly useful for adults who want to enter professions such as nursing or teaching where a Science qualification is required.
