Languages and Braille Courses

The Adult Education Service offers courses in a range of languages, including British Sign Language (BSL).  We also offer Braille courses.

European and Asian languages are offered as short courses, starting in the autumn term, followed by further courses in the spring and summer terms. If you have some prior knowledge of a language and would like to join a class in the spring or summer term, please phone Karen Williams on 024 7678 6959 or Farah Mahmood on 024 7666 4673 for more information.

Beginners' courses assume you have no previous knowledge of the language. Courses offered at year 2 and year 3 build on what you have already learned. These courses do not offer accreditation, so there is no formal assessment.

BSL is offered at levels 1 and 2.  These courses offer qualifications through the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP), which is the nationally recognised examining body for BSL.  Both these awards are now unitised.  This means that learners enrol termly. To be awarded the full certificate at either level, candidates must complete all three units. Learners who successfully complete a unit and do not wish to proceed to the full award can apply for a certificate for that unit. For complete beginners, the five-week, non-accredited Starting to Sign course is strongly recommended.

Braille courses offer reading and writing skills for blind and partially sighted people.  Some places may be available for sighted people who need to support a family member. These courses do not offer a qualification. For further details contact Alison Browne on 024 7650 7820.
