Music and Dance Courses

Music, dance and drama for all.

Did you know... Coventry Adult Education Service offers 18 different types of music and dance courses, many of them for complete beginners?

Music

Whether you're 20 or 70, you're never too old to start learning how to sing, play an instrument or write a song - lots of people have said they wished they had done it sooner!

Many of our classes are for complete beginners, requiring no previous musical experience. Our tutors know about the challenges in getting started in music and will encourage you to develop your interest.

As well as many Guitar courses for beginners, we are also offering beginners' courses in Alto or Tenor Saxophone, Keyboard, Harp, Celtic Violin and Mandolin or Bodhran.

Ask us if you need advice about instruments. We have a number of harps which we can provide for our harp class. For some other courses, often a good way to start is to hire an instrument from a music firm.

In September we will be running our African Drumming course in the evening - our 'twilight' course last year was really quite popular! We have a complete set of djembes - the traditional West African drums. If you're interested, why not stay on for another hour and learn African Dance.

There are several follow-on programmes. In Guitar, we have: Beginners Plus classes if you have been to one of our beginners' courses or have some basic knowledge; and Improvers' classes if you've been playing for about two years.

There are also follow-on courses in Keyboard. Our Singing Group is for people with or without singing experience. Lastly, we have the Cobwebs Orchestra course - all instruments, all levels, for anyone wanting to 'blow the cobwebs' off their instruments, try out lots of different styles of music and gain confidence playing with others.

Dance

Got the Strictly Come Dancing fever?  Then why not enrol on one of our popular Ballroom classes or get your feet moving to the infectious Latin beat of Salsa. Love Latin moves and would like more?  Then Latino Club dancing combines Salsa, Mambo, Merengue and Argentine Tango. Come solo or bring a partner.

Prefer to dance solo? Then try a class in Tap, Latin in Line or Line Dancing where you will improve co-ordination and rhythm, learning sequences to motivating music.

If you'd prefer another style then try Bollywood dancing - Indian traditional and contemporary dance set to the latest pop, Indian and bhangra music.Or why not try African Dance, a new course this September? You'll have fun learning moves from traditional and modern African dance. Or - also new this year - Street Dance, a fresh and funky class with choreography inspired from R'n'B and Hip Hop music videos - an energetic class that combines urban music with great tunes!

We have a choice of daytime and evening dance classes at community venues across the city. Don't worry if you've never danced before - our tutors will help you along the way and make sure you get the most out of your course. Many classes are for  complete beginners, and there are also improver classes for people with some experience. You'll get the opportunity to perform for the local community (only if you're interested!), and you'll also be kept up to date about social evenings and other events where you can enjoy practising the dances you have learned in class.

So, whether you're 18 or 80, and whether your aim is to launch yourself into the local dance scene, hold your own at a wedding, or simply keep active, our dance programme is for you!
