School admissions

School places and admissions

This is a short guide to admissions to schools and what steps parents can take with their children to ensure a place at a school. In addition each school has its own prospectus which is available to you.

These pages cover primary school admissions, junior school admissions and secondary school admissions, the appeals process and include the questions most often asked by parents. If you have any other questions please get in touch with the Primary and Secondary School Admissions Teams using the contact details at the foot of the page.

For advice about pre-school or playgroups, see the childcare section of the website.

Find out more about a school

You can find out more about a school by viewing the school contacts page, which will give you links to each schools' OfSTED report and a links to schools' websites.

If you want to find out how a particular school has been performing then follow this link to view the DCSF Performance Tables.

Apply for a school place online

Follow this link to make an online application for a school place for a child who is starting school for the first time, or who is moving up to secondary school from primary school. Although this is a relatively straight-forward process, there is a "User Guide" available to take you through this process should you need it.

Note: the online application form is only suitable for children transferring from primary to secondary, or from infants to juniors, or for applying for primary school reception places. Any parents who have queries about in-year transfers should contact the Admissions Teams directly on 024 7683 1613 (Primary) or 024 7683 1573 (Secondary).

Admission Policies

Policies for admissions for 2010/11 have now been determined - click here for Primary School policies and/or here for Secondary School policies.

Policies have also been determined for admissions in September 2011, following a consultation period. They are available to view here.

From September 2010, the Local Authority is required to co-ordinate all admissions, including in-year admissions. Therefore it has developed a policy to ensure this runs smoothly. It can be found here: In-year co-ordinated scheme 2010
