Educational Psychology Service
The Educational Psychology Service is a team of educational psychologists who work with schools and parents/carers to promote the educational, personal and social development of children and young people.
Our knowledge and experience
We have knowledge and experience of:
- Ways that children learn and develop into mentally healthy young people
- Things which may prevent children and young people from learning and developing at the expected rate and in the expected ways
- The special arrangements schools, parents/carers and others can make to address the difficulties children and young people experience.
What do we do?
We work with children, parents and carers, schools and others to promote the development and learning of children aged 0-19 years. We work directly with some children who have difficulties in such areas as:
- General development and learning
- Communication and language
- Emotional development
- Behaviour
- Relationships
- Physical skills
- Hearing or vision
- Other medical problems which affect learning.
How do we do it?
If school has concerns about your child the school will discuss these with you first. They will plan, with you, ways of supporting your child. One option may be for us to be involved. School will always seek your agreement before contacting us.
When we become involved we may:
- Talk with your child's teacher and look at your child's work
- Talk with other staff involved, such as the Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), Teaching Assistants
- Meet with you
- Observe your child in school
- Carry out a range of tests or other assessments with your child
- We may wish to talk to other people involved with your child (eg Health Visitor, speech therapist, nursery staff, doctors).
This will enable us to offer advice as to how your child may be best helped. If, after talking with you, the Local Education Authority starts a statutory assessment of your child's needs then we will be asked to provide advice as part of that assessment.
Records and reports
If we write a report on your child you will be sent a copy. Any records we keep about your child are confidential, but you can ask to look at the information we have on your child.
What other specialist help is available?
The Education Service operates eleven other SEN and Inclusion Support Services. These services all work with schools and parents/carers to promote the educational, personal, social and emotional development of children and young people.
