Hospital Education Service

The Hospital Education Service is a team of teachers and other education support staff who provide education for school age children who are unable to attend their usual school temporarily due to accident or illness, or teenage pregnancy and young motherhood.

We have knowledge and experience of:

  • The need for continuity in education, despite hospitalisation, illness, pregnancy and young motherhood
  • The ways in which medical conditions affect learning and development
  • The additional needs of young girls facing pregnancy and motherhood
  • The long-term effects of interrupted education on children’s capacity for reaching their potential.

What do we do?

We work with children, teachers, parents/carers, medical staff and other agencies to promote the development and learning of children aged 4 -16 years.

We work directly with children and young people who have difficulties in areas such as:

  • Attending their usual school following hospitalisation or long term illness
  • Reaching their full potential because of time missed at their usual school due to various medical conditions
  • Re-integrating successfully back into their usual school.
  • Managing pregnancy and motherhood, together with schooling.

How do we do it?

With parental permission, we talk to schools, parents/carers and other professionals and then offer full time education to children while they are in hospital; home tuition for children who are being re-integrated back into their usual school, and a separate unit with a crèche for pregnant schoolgirls and schoolgirl mothers.  All children follow the National Curriculum.

When we become involved we will:

  • Talk to other people involved with your child’s education
  • Teach your child according to his/her age and ability
  • Monitor their progress
  • Plan and support their re-integration back into their usual school
  • Have regular meetings with you and other people involved.

Where do we do it?

We work in the hospitals, in the unit for pregnant schoolgirls and schoolgirl mothers, in homes and in other places in the local community.

Records and reports

Daily records are kept about the work you child has covered in lessons. Written reports are also sent each term to your child’s usual school and a copy sent to you. All records and reports we keep about your child are confidential, but you can ask to look at the information we have about your child.

What other specialist help is available?

The Education Service operates eleven other SEN and Inclusion Support Services. These services all work with schools and parents/carers to promote the educational, personal, social and emotional development of children and young people.
