Pre-school Education Service

The Pre-school Education Service is a team of specialist teachers, nursery nurses and learning support assistants who provide learning and behaviour support at home, early years settings and school nursery for young children who are experiencing difficulties with their development.

We have knowledge and experience of:

  • things that affect early learning development and behaviour
  • the special support, primarily involving parents/carers, early years settings, schools and ourselves, that is likely to improve learning and behaviour.

We all have significant training, experience and skills in this specialist field.

What do we do?

We work with parents/carers, children, early years practitioners, teachers and the ocal education authority to promote children's early learning and behaviour by:

  • Assessment of learning and behaviour difficulties
  • Provision of advice, guidance and support to parents/carers on special methods, approaches and resources
  • Provision of specialist teaching and learning support directly to individual children or groups of children at home, in settings and schools
  • Access to specialist play and learning resources
  • Training for parents, practitioners and schools
  • Teaching within a pre school specialist unit
  • Monitoring children's progress in partnership with other agencies who may be involved with the child.

How do we do it?

When we become involved, our support usually includes:

  • Talk with parents/carers
  • Home-based teaching support for parents and children, eg Portage
  • Peripatetic support - in-class support, advisory work
  • Talk with other agencies who may be providing support to the child; eg speech and language therapy
  • Early communication teaching support groups
  • Talk with early years staff involved
  • Talk with other people involved with your child; eg school nursery teacher.

This will help enable us to work together with you and your child and other staff to improve your child's learning and behaviour.

What other specialist help is available?

The Education Service operates eleven other SEN and Inclusion Support Services. These services all work with schools and parents/carers to promote the educational, personal, social and emotional development of children and young people.
