Speech and Language Support Service
The Speech and Language Support Service is a team of specialist teachers, nursery nurses and teaching assistants who provide educational support to students with diagnosed speech and language disorders in a number of mainstream schools across the city.
Students may have problems such as:
- receptive or expressive language difficulties
- verbal dyspraxia
- speech difficulties
- semantic pragmatic language disorder
- social communication difficulties.
What do we do?
There is a Primary Speech and Language Unit where pupils attend for up to four days a week. They are taught all of the National Curriculum subjects and a special curriculum to meet their special needs. They spend at least one day a week in their local school. Other Primary and all Secondary pupils are supported in mainstream schools. They receive in-class support and specialist teaching in their areas of difficulty. Most students receive regular speech and language therapy in their schools.
How do we do it?
The Speech and Language Support Service works in partnership with parents, schools and the local education authority to meet the requirements of the Students’ Statements of Special Educational need.
Pupils are enabled to:
- achieve their potential in spite of their specific difficulties
- develop their linguistic and social communication skills
- access the National Curriculum and statutory assessments.
