A new straightforward system of scoring food businesses for hygiene and legal compliance is being piloted in Coventry - why not find out the "scores on the doors" for your favourite restaurant, bar or cafe?

How food premises are rated

Coventry City Council is taking part in a pilot project, with the Food Standards Agency, to assess the impact of making food hygiene inspection results available to the public by displaying them at the premises and publishing them on our website. Premises will continue to be assessed for food safety practices, the condition and cleanliness of the structure and equipment, and confidence in the management systems - but the scoring system will now be more straightforward.

We have always 'scored' these matters using the national food safety risk rating scheme, however, this national scheme is quite complex and so to make matters easier for the public to understand, these scores will now be translated into star ratings.

What the star ratings mean:

	Achieving high standard of food safety and legal compliance. Good practice is being followed. Possible minor legal contraventions
	Satisfactory standard of food safety and compliance. Some minor legal contraventions. Premises is in top 50% of businesses in the City
	Some major non-compliances, improvement in standards required
No Stars	Poor standards. Formal action may be taken

What does a certificate look like?

An example of a certificate (attached as a PDF document) is available to show you what you are looking for when you visit a food business.

Making our findings available to you

The business will be issued with a certificate detailing the rating that they have been given. There are two main ways for you to find the information:

• The business will be asked to display the certificate at the premises.
• We will publish the certificate on our website (follow the link on the left to the online "scores on the doors" system).

This represents a significant change in our approach and gives you much more information about the business you are intending to buy food from.

Star ratings are published for premises inspected since 01/05/2006. This includes virtually every restaurant, takeaway, chip shop and hot food outlet. Further Star ratings will be added at the end of every month as we are currently in the process of inspecting and issuing reports to all food businesses. If you cannot find the particular business that you are looking for it is because it has not been inspected under the scheme yet.
