How to make a planning application

There are a lot of different types of applications that fall under planning control and therefore there are a number of different application forms. On this page you will find a link to those forms and accompanying guidance notes as well as advice on how the forms should be completed.

It is important that you make your application on the correct application form, therefore if you are in any doubt please contact planning control for advice. Alternatively you can apply over the internet from the Planning Portal web pages. You can make a full submission or submit part of the application sending any information by post if required, fees can also be paid online though our secure payment service.

Informal advice

Before making a formal planning application you may first wish to discuss the application with a planning officer to get some informal advice. You can contact planning control by letter, phone or e-mail (details at the bottom of the page) or by using our online pre application enquiry form. Please provide as much information as possible and photos, sketches etc and always include the address of the house or site you are enquiring about.

Information Requirements

For every application it is important that you provide us with all the correct information and plans and ensure that the correct certificates are completed.

In order to help you assess what information and plans may be required for your application we have produced a checklist of information requirements.

The Validation Check List sets details the different types of information you should provide when submitting a planning application.

The validation check list (pdf 80kb)

The information is split into three seperate areas

National requirements (amended 04/04/2008) (pdf 150kb)

Local requirements (pdf 80kb)

Other site specific information (pdf 18kb)

Please read the advice carefully because if you fail to provide information that is deemed necessary for your application then we will not validate [register] your submission until all the information has been received.

We have provided below documents to assist in the preparation of householder planning applications which explain the items on the validation checklist that you will need to provide to ensure youre application is not delayed during the validation process.

Householder validation booklet (pdf 60kb)

Householder validation checklist (leaflet) (pdf 60kb)

Whether your application requires additional supporting information will depend on the location and the "land use" history of the site, for example the site may fall within an Environment Agency flood zone or have a history of industrial use or because of the size or type of development proposed.

We have tried to provide links to sources of information where you can find out what constraints may apply to your site and where you may get further advice and assistance. You can of course always contact the planning advisory desk for further advice and contact details are given at the bottom of this page.
