Dog fouling on public land
Each day large amounts of dogs' excrement is left on public footpaths and playing fields. Dog owners can now be fined for allowing their dog to foul public areas. This section explains more about this health risk and what dog owners should do to avoid a fine.
All dogs carry the sticky eggs of the roundworm, these can grow up to 18cm in length. Roundworms are great survivors and can survive all weather conditions including frost. They can remain dormant in the environment for up to two years. The eggs from the roundworm can easily be transmitted to humans via dog foul by picking them up off your hands and clothes. If ingested roundworm can lead to a range of symptoms from aches and pains to bronchial conditions. In rare cases it can cause damage to eyesight, this is due to an infection called Toxocara Canis. Risks can be reduced by:
- Regular worming of your dog
- Always clean up after your dog
- Good hygiene - always wash hands
Coventry City Council has adopted the Dogs Fouling of Land Act 1996. This makes it an offence for anyone to allow their dog to foul public land without 'picking up', with very few exceptions.
This includes roads, footpaths, school playing fields, woodland, sports fields and parks. Dog owners who are caught not 'picking up' face receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice for £50. Non-payment of this notice could result in prosecution where magistrates can fine up to £1000. It is no defence to claim ignorance of the dog's actions or not having a 'poop scoop' or similar device.
Scooping the poopSimply place a bag over the dog mess and lift it whilst pulling the bag downwards. Tie a knot in the bag and dispose of it in a dog waste/litter bin or take it home and dispose of it in a wheelie bin. Following this method means that your hands do not come directly into contact with the faeces. Nappy sacks are ideal for picking up. You can also purchase plastic poop scoop devices from pet shops to use in conjunction with a bag. | |
