Litter

Litter.

To discard litter, be it packaging, food waste or cigarette butts is not only anti-social but is a criminal offence which upon conviction carries a fine of up to £2500.

Coventry has a zero tolerance policy toward people who discard litter, which includes litter thrown from vehicles and have a team of enforcement officers who carryout regular patrols issuing fixed penalty fines of £75 to offenders.

Our aim is to reduce litter by enforcement and education.  Public Protection recently launched a new Education Initiative called 'Keep it Clean' which is aimed at liaising with schools to raise litter awareness and organise community clean ups.

How you can help

Should you witness litter being thrown from a vehicle and are prepared to make a formal witness statement we may be able to take action against the offender. The information we would require is:

  • Vehicle registration
  • Type of litter discarded
  • Who discarded the litter - ie was it the driver, front or rear passenger
  • Location, date and time of incident

If you are a member of a residents' group we may be able to assist with organising a community litter pick in your area.
