Joining and using a library
Joining the library is easy and membership is free. Information on library loans, library fees, overdue charges and renewing library loans
How do I join the library?
Call in to any library and complete a form. You can download a form.(PDF) All you need is proof of your current address. Normally one of the following is all you need:
- Driving licence
- Benefits / pension books
- Bills: gas, electricity, council tax, water rates or similar
- Other documents such as your medical card (typed) or council rent book (typed)
Other identification may be acceptable but please ring the library before you visit to check. This will save you time when you join.
We will give you a library card If at a later date you change your name, address or phone number please tell us so we can keep our records up to date.
You can borrow up to 20 books, eight Music CDs, Talking Books, and up to four DVDs and CD ROMs right away. There is no minimum age for children to join the library. We don't need proof of address if you are under 16, but a parent or carer must sign the form before you can borrow any items.
Your library card is issued subject to the byelaws of the libraries; in signing your ticket you are bound to comply with these. A copy of the byelaws is available at each library. All information held on our computer is covered by the Data Protection Act and will not be given to any unauthorised person or organisation.
