The Children's Disability Record

What is the Children's Disability Record?

One of the requirements of the Children's Act 1989, is to compile a Record of Children with Disabilities. This is to ensure that the Social Services, Health and Education Departments give greater priority to supporting children with disabilities and their families, and to help us plan and co-ordinate services.  It is also used to provide information to parents and carers about services.

The Children's Disability Record is a list of names and basic information on children with disabilities, held on computer and updated at regular intervals. It conforms to Data Protection Act Regulations.

Information held on the record about your child

Each child will remain confidential. Only authorised workers from Social Services, the Health Services and the Education Service have access to statistical information via the Record Co-ordinator.

Does your child have to be included?

No. The record is voluntary and your child does not have to be included. Should you wish to remove your child from the record this can be done at any time. However we believe most parents will see the benefits and want their child to be included because:

  • It will help us to identify the needs of children with disabilities in general and plan appropriate services for them.
  • It will ensure that we are aware of your child and his/her needs.
  • We can help to plan for your child's future needs, and assist in the transition to adult services.

We will be able to provide families with regular updates, newsletters and information about the services that are available.

Will it affect entitlement to services?

No. Services are dependent on assessment of need, not inclusion on the record.

It is not linked to any other records held by Social Services Department, or any other records or registers, including the Child Protection Register of children about whom there are concerns.

Which children can be registered?

To qualify for registration the child must:

  • Live in Coventry or be the responsibility of the Local Authority
  • Be 0-18 years old or be receiving education at school
  • Have a physical or intellectual impairment, which is likely to continue indefinitely

Their impairment substantially restricts expected achievement or daily living in any of the following areas:

  • Intellectual development of learning
  • Communication
  • Self care
  • Hearing and vision
  • Mobility
  • Independence appropriate for age, gender, cultural, religious or social circumstances.
