Infectious diseases

By law, doctors are required to notify us about certain infectious diseases e.g. tuberculosis, food poisoning or other food-borne illnesses.

We may also receive notifications from the public, businesses and other local authorities. We may investigate the notification and may contact the person with symptoms to establish the background and to try to identify the source of the infection.

The purpose of this investigation is to try to prevent the spread of illness and to try and establish possible causes. Advice is also given to the patient on how to prevent the spread of disease.

Suspect cases of food poisoning are investigated by the Food Safety Team to try and find out where the food poisoning came from and prevent a recurrence.

Please see our food poisoning section for more advice and information about food poisoning and other food- borne illnesses.
