Safeguarding Adults Policy
Safeguarding adults is an issue that concerns us all, and we all have a responsibility to ensure our fellow citizens are protected from physical, financial, sexual, psychological, discriminatory or institutional abuse or neglect.
The
headlines in the press tend to focus on the abuse of children, particularly highlighting where agencies have failed and quite
rightly resources are targeted to ensure children are protected.
Vulnerable adults also have the right to live
as independently as possible and be protected from abuse. In March 2000, The Department of Health produced No
Secrets (external website), which required local authority Community Services Departments to take the lead role in
developing multi-agency Policies and Procedures to protect vulnerable adults from abuse.
The Coventry Safeguarding Adults
Board has been established to oversee the writing, implementation, development, monitoring and evaluation of this Policy,
Procedures and Good Practice Guide. It has members drawn from the statutory and voluntary and independent sectors. There is
also a Safeguarding Adults Co-ordinator and an Administrator to support the Safeguarding Committee in its work. We believe
that this demonstrates our commitment to actively tackling this issue.
This multi-agency Policy, Procedures and
Good Practice Guide, which were launched on November 10th 2003, have been developed to protect the citizens of Coventry and
all agencies are united in developing services to prevent abuse, and to ensure that where it arises it is dealt with to the
highest professional standards.
Although Community Services is the lead agency, we will only deliver No
Secrets by working together. Coventry has a strong base for developing services for citizens by working in partnership
with agencies across the city, and we will continue with this tradition of safeguarding vulnerable adults.
