Support for older people
There are over 48,000 people living in Coventry aged 65 years or over, and the number who are over 80 years of age is growing, as it is nationally. The Community Services Directorate of the Council are here to provide support for those who need it.
Our Role
Most people want to live a normal life and to continue to play an active part in family and community activity, getting the best out of their later years. They wish to live independently for as long as they can in their own homes, and to engage in community activity in ways that we would all value.
Our aim is to help people to achieve these outcomes as far as we are able. Our promoting independence philosophy is based on people making decisions for themselves and retaining choice and control over how they live their lives, and what outcomes they want for themselves.
If you or someone who cares for you or helps you contacts us we will try to help in a number of ways:
- We will try to give information, advice or guidance about your situation or problem.
- Our leaflet "Help to live at home" will be useful. See link below.
- We may help you to get whatever help it is you need from elsewhere by "signposting" you to a service where you should get what you need such as through the Older People's Information service people link. (External). We have lots of information about resources and services in the city.
- We may decide that you are at risk of losing some of your independence or that there are some risks to your health or well being if support isn't provided. In these cases you may fulfil our eligibility criteria and be offered an assessment of your situation. This means talking to you about your situation, finding out about things you value and how you would like to live your life, finding out what outcomes you would like to achieve, what the obstacles in your situation might be, and what support might be available to help you.
What help is available?
- An assessment should help us to work out with you how best you can achieve your desired outcomes.
- It may be that you simply need help to get involved in ordinary community services and facilities that we all value, some social or recreational activity that you wish to take part in.
- It is possible that you have a carer who needs support.
- You may be offered some short-term services arranged by us which will help you regain lost skills or confidence which have resulted in you living less independently, for example Intermediate Care.
- There may be some new technology we can install to help you live more safely in your environment with reassurance that help is available if there is an untoward incident. This is called Telecare.
- You may need longer-term services or equipment to help you maintain your independence.
Whatever help you are offered will always be geared to promote your independence and to enable you to determine what outcomes you wish to achieve and to enable you to retain control over what and how services are provided. One way we enable this to happen is by offering you a Direct Payment which means you can have control over any money that is provided to buy help that you may need.
How you get in touch with us
We have three teams for older people, who see people depending on which GP they are registered with. If you do not know which your office is, contact the one nearest to your home address, or ring Civic Centre 1 Reception main telephone number on 024 7683 3478. Staff will usually be able to put your call through to the correct number or get somebody to call you back.
You can also obtain help and advice from partners we work with in the city.
