OlderPeopleFirst - Have Your Say

These pages tell you all about the latest changes in the development of older people's services.  It gives you the opportunity to read reports, view newsletters and find out about and events we have planned to keep people up to date and get feedback about what is happening. There is also a page for you to tell us about the issues that affect older people that you would like us to tackle. Although we may not be able to solve everything it is useful to know what is important to the people who use our services so that we can take these things into account in future plans.

The key changes that are currently taking place are:

  • Easier access to older people's social care in Coventry

The City Council's Older People's Services have made changes to their Assessment teams so that it's easier to access information, advice and assessments for older people and their carers.

During November, some important changes are taking place within the Assessment and Case Management service (which include social workers)

Councillor Heather Johnson, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said, "A much needed single point of access will be in place from 24 November, improving customer service and response times,  particularly at first contact. We are introducing dedicated staff for reviews and have developed an Ageing Well team. This approach will benefit older people, their carers and other professionals, making it easier to get in touch with Social care".

"These changes will help to ensure that older people and their carers are more quickly identified and assessed, with staff focussed on working with people to achieve their outcomes and assist them in making informed choices, including direct payments."

If you are contacting social care for the first time about an older person or their carer please telephone the Community StART team on 024 7683 3003. The fax number for the service is 024 7683 4007, and the email is olderpeoplesupport@coventry.gov.uk

  • We want to know about what is important to older people in the city. We are not promising to solve everything but if we know the things that are most important to you we can try and take these into account in our future planning.
  • Proposals to create more choice for older people through personalising our day services – we are about to commence the delivery of key changes in our day services for older people which will signal a move away from traditional centre-based services to people being able to have more choice about services are arranged to meet their individual requirements. Find out more about personalising day care services.
  • The decision to close the City Councils remaining residential homes was made in 1999 as part of the New Homes for Old policy. A consultation on the timescale for any closures took place between 7th January and 30th April 2008.   The outcome of this consultation was approved by the city council earlier this year, including the plans for development of more appropriate services. Find out more about closures to residential homes for older people.
  • Proposals to further develop the services we provide with Health with the aim of creating a system where people can be better supported to avoid hospital admission and then supported in being discharged to an appropriate setting following any period in hospital. A key principle for this is that decisions regarding long term care are not best made in a hospital setting so we want all older people to have a period of support to properly assess what, if any ongoing care support is needed.
