Abandoned vehicles

It is illegal to abandon a vehicle. We have a duty to remove an abandoned vehicle under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978, Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005 and the Removal and Disposal of Vehicle Regulations 1986. The definition of an abandoned vehicle also extends to trailers and caravans that would normally be attached to a vehicle.

What is the service?

We inspect and remove abandoned vehicles from the streets of Coventry. This will help maintain a clean and safe environment.

Why is the service provided?

Abandoned vehicles are both dangerous and a visible nuisance that attracts crime and anti-social behaviour. Many vehicles can end up severely damaged or burnt out if they are not removed quickly.

We aim to:

• Inspect all vehicles within 24 hours of being reported.
• Remove vehicles within 24 hours of being deemed abandoned.

Please help us by:

• Not abandoning your vehicle
• Reporting abandoned vehicles, giving as much information on the offending vehicle as possible, including:
• Make
• Model
• Registration
• Colour
• Location

Is there a charge?

The charges to recover a vehicle are as follows:

• Removal of vehicle: £105 (national charge)
• Storage: £12 per day
• Return of vehicle within 7 working days: £25
• Return of vehicle within 24 hours: £50

Vehicle Surrender Scheme

We operate a free of charge amnesty scheme for vehicles that have reached the end of their useful life.
