Parking - Think B 4 U Park
On Monday 4 April 2005, the City Council took over the responsibility of Parking Enforcement from the West Midlands Police. The parking restrictions in the city will not change. The staff that issue the tickets will be Coventry City Council officers instead of police officers or traffic wardens. These staff will be known as Civil Enforcement Officers with effect from Monday 31 March 2008.
For more information see the Parking Enforcement section on the left hand side of the page.
Why it's important to think before you park
It's important that drivers think about others when they park – that's why we're saying "Think B 4 U Park" to any driver who parks their vehicle illegally with no consideration for other people.
We want to make sure we:
- Reduce the number of illegally parked vehicles;
- Improve the safety of our roads and pavements for everyone;
- Help emergency vehicles and other large vehicles – especially buses get around the city more easily;
- Help all traffic travel more easily so improving journey times;
- Improve our environment by reducing damage to pavements and verges.
Parking offences will be classed as civil, not criminal offences. The theme of the enforcement will be known as "Think B 4 U Park" to encourage drivers to do just that, consider all road and footway users such as other motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users when they park.
This new arrangement of dealing with enforcement in the city, is part of a long term plan to improve road safety and increase traffic flow on Coventry's roads and the appearance of the city.
We are asking people to remember when parking:
- The highway code;
- To look at the road markings;
- To check the sign plates by the side of the road;
- Waiting restrictions apply to the whole of the highway including verges and pavements;
- Don't park anywhere that could cause danger to other road users.
CVOne currently patrol and enforce parking in the City Council's car parks but from April the new Parking Attendants will be taking on this role in addition to patrolling on-street parking areas.
Around the country, councils are taking over the responsibility for dealing with illegal parking – this should free up police time to deal with other issues.
Before you park make sure you look for any road markings and signs. Below is a reminder of the restrictions and what they mean.
Single yellow lines on the road mean there is a restriction on parking. There will usually be a sign plate (on a pole or lamp post) showing the times when parking is not allowed.
Double yellow lines mean no waiting (parking) at any time. Sign plates are now not required where there are double yellow lines.
White dotted bays mean that parking is allowed for a limited period. A sign plate will be provided on a pole or lamppost.
Urban Clearways do not have any yellow lines and only have signs.
We're increasing the number of Parking Attendants so that we can deal more effectively with drivers who are breaking the law and making life difficult for many people.
Drivers who don't Think B 4 U Park are a danger to others. We're serious about taking action against people who are acting illegally. It's just not worth parking illegally… it will cost you!
