PrimeLines Information
'PrimeLines' is a £42million package aimed at improving bus travel in Coventry. We are 3 years into a 4 year project. £28million is funded by the Government and the rest is a mixture of contributions from Centro and the bus operators. None of the project is funded through Coventry City Council funding, i.e. Council Tax. This money has enabled the PrimeLines team to implement some of the many proposed measures.
'PrimeLines' have seven 'corridors' running from the City Centre to the outskirts of Coventry. The upgrades will offer incentives for people to travel by bus. In our schemes we look at the possibility of including:
- Bus Lanes & Bus Bypasses
- Bus Priority Measures (such as bus gates)
- New Bus Stops/Shelters/Boarders
- New parking facilities and restrictions (such as red routes)
- Improved traffic signals/roundabouts
- New landscaped areas
- Improved cycling facilities
- Improved pedestrian facilities
- Provision of Real Time Passenger Information & CCTV Cameras
What are the 'PrimeLines' corridors?
If you want to find out any information on works carried out in your area, please select the appropriate corridor. If you cannot find which corridor is relevant for you, you can contact the team using the information at the bottom of the screen.
Corridor 1 - Foleshill Road (including Longford & Holbrooks)
The Foleshill Road is a major route through the city to the M6 with various shopping complexes and places of worship and education. You may remember that the Foleshill Road was the original Bus Showcase route in Coventry. Bus lanes were created both on the inbound side and the outbound side, including two bus gates on the outbound side. PrimeLines have completed major works on Foleshill Road.
Corridor 2 - Stoney Stanton Road (including Bell Green, Henley & Wood End)
The Stoney Stanton Road and the Bell Green Road contribute to a major route through the city which connects the City Centre and Riley Square whilst serving the Gallagher Retail Park. It is a main link route for various areas of the city including Hillfields, Foleshill, Wyken and Bell Green. PrimeLines have been doing works on this route to assist services such as the number 21 and number 22 in aid of increasing reliability and shortening journey times.
Corridor 3 - Ansty Road (including Ball Hill, Wyken & Walsgrave)
The A4600 is the main route from the City Centre to the M6 and the M69. It is one of the busiest routes in the West Midlands and Ball Hill is classed as an Air Quality Management Area. This route is also one of the primary routes to the Walsgrave Hospital. PrimeLines have been attempting to address the traffic issues on this route as well as assisting the buses to increase their reliability and shorten their journey times. A Red Route has been introduced to attempt to resolve the parking issues on the route. Parking bays have been constructed at various sites along the route to improve parking facilities and manage traffic flow.
Corridor 4 - Binley Road (including Gosford Green, Stoke Aldermoor & Ernesford Grange)
The A428 is a major route that links the City Centre with the A46. It also serves many residential areas including Stoke, Wyken and Binley. The route is also used as a way to access the Walsgrave Hospital. This was one of the first projects undertaken by PrimeLines and work is now complete.
Corridor 5 - Willenhall (including Cheylesmore & Whitley)
Corridor 5 is the 'other half' of the number 21 and number 22 route. The corridor mainly serves residential and shopping areas but can be used as a link to the A45 at Tollbar Island. It travels through Cheylesmore, Whitley and Willenhall.
Corridor 7 - University of Warwick (including Earlsdon & Canley)
Corridor 7 links the City Centre with the University of Warwick. The corridor follows the route undertaken by the number 12 Travel Coventry service which is one of the most frequently used services in Coventry. It serves the residential areas of Earlsdon and Canley and terminates at the University of Warwick. This route is hampered by serious congestion, especially in Earlsdon, on Hearsall Common and in Canley. PrimeLines is attempting to assist the buses to increase reliability and decrease journey times.
Corridor 8 - Tile Hill Lane (including Spon End)
Corridor 8, like Corridor 4, was one of the first projects undertaken by PrimeLines and work is complete. The corridor links the City Centre to the Tile Hill College whilst serving Spon End, Coventry Business Park and Tile Hill. This corridor includes the Butts/Albany Road junction which is under investigation regarding the new junction's performance.
