Cycle Training in Coventry
In line with Coventry City Council's pledge to get more people to walk, cycle or use public transport, the Policy and Sustainable Transport Team offers the opportunity to undertake cycle training to improve people's skills when cycling. We offer a huge range of courses to the general public, however, we mainly train in schools in Year 5, 6 or 7. We have also produced a booklet to complement the cycle training. This is available to download at the bottom of the page.
Why is cycling important?
Inactivity is now a major health issue, and every year the number of people who are overweight or even obese increases.
The benefits to people of being more active are enormous. Activity burns energy and keeps them fit and keeps them more alert and ready to learn.
Cycling provides mobility and independence it is a very environmentally friendly form of transport but most of all it's great FUN.
All Coventry City Council cycle training courses follow the guidelines set out in Cycling England's Bikeability scheme. All instructors are qualified at, or are working towards qualification at, the Government approved National Standard in cycle training.
What courses are available to schools?
Coventry City Council wishes to encourage more pupils to cycle to school safely, therefore, we offer pupils the opportunity to undertake cycle training. All Coventry schools are offered training by our team of professional trained instructors. In the vast majority of schools training takes place within the school timetable although some schools prefer training, in school holidays or at weekends.
Cycle training is a very useful tool in contributing towards the five outcomes that are part of "Every Child Matters". It has obvious links with being healthy and staying safe, whilst it encourages trainees to engage in law-abiding and positive behaviour in and out of school. It aids a pupil's ability to attend and enjoy school. Cycling can also enhance economic well-being by giving access to a form of transportation and provide mobility increasing readiness for employment.
Several schools participating in the cycle training schemes have logged their involvement in the OFSTED Self-evaluation Form under Section 4: personal development and well-being (see below) -
4a. To what extent do pupils adopt healthy life-styles?
4b.
To what extent do learners feel safe and adopt safe practices?
4e. How well do learners prepare for their future economic
well-being?
