Travelling to School

The City Council is committed to promoting walking, cycling and bus use, particularly on journeys to and from school and college and to improving pedestrian, cycle and bus facilities to enable more students, parents, staff and visitors to make a positive choice when deciding how to travel.

Travel plans

We are working with schools to help them develop School Travel Plans. These set out actions that will make it easier and safer for children to walk, cycle or use the bus on the school journey and reduce the number of car trips. The benefits include improved health and fitness, greater independence for children, reduced congestion and pollution and a safer environment around schools.

Safer Routes to School

A number of different teams within the City Council and numerous external partners have a role in encouraging and facilitating sustainable travel to school. The Policy and Sustainable Transport Team manages the City Council's Safer Routes to School programme, which exists to improve walking and cycling routes to schools.

School Travel Initiatives

We also run a comprehensive programme of Bikeability-accredited Cycle Training courses at most primary schools and a selection of secondary schools. Through the 'Bike It' project, we are also providing intensive support to selected schools that are committed to developing the cycling skills of their pupils and encouraging more of them to cycle to school.
