Walking

Children walking to school

Coventry is a fairly flat and compact city.  This means that, for many shorter journeys, walking can be the best way to get around.  An average person can walk a mile in under 20 minutes and walking is a great way to get your 30 minutes a day moderate exercise.  It can fit into your daily life and it's free!

Walking to School

School Travel Plans encourage children to walk to school. This could include initiatives such as walking buses, buddy systems or designing safe routes to school. For further information, contact your child's school or look at the Travelling to School section.

Walking to Work

With roads becoming congested and car parks overflowing, companies are now encouraging their employees to walk to work. This can also be combined with public transport use for those who have to go a bit further to travel to work. You can guarantee your journey time, you can walk in all weathers and you don't take up any space in the company car park. If you work in the city centre, you don't have to pay for car parking. Forward thinking companies are also setting up lunchtime walking sessions and providing showering and changing facilities for its walkers.

Walking for Leisure and Health

There are many walks in and around Coventry. If you prefer not to walk on your own, you can join a walking group. Coventry City Council runs various walks throughout the city. Please see the Healthy Walks section for further information.

You could also join an organised group such as the Ramblers, who not only walk around Coventry, but also organise walks further afield.
