Burges townscape heritage project

The Burges

The Council will soon be submitting a stage 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure funding for improvements to the Burges area.

The area, which was given Conservation Area status in 2014, is made up of Burges and Cross Cheaping, Hales Street and Palmer Lane. The area is one of the few parts of the city which still shows its original make up.

The potential transformation and restoration of this historic part of the city includes:

  • Repair and reinstatement work to existing buildings
  • Removal of unsympathetic alterations already made
  • Shop front improvements
  • Redevelopment of Palmer Lane, including a new building for shops and restaurants, public realm and frontage improvements
  • Opening up the River Sherbourne
  • Public realm improvements

We expect to find out the outcome of the application in June 2018.
