Lost and damaged items

If you have lost or damaged an item, you will need to report it, in person, to any library as soon as possible. Fines for lost and damaged items change each financial year (in April).

Lost items

If an item has been lost, you will have options as to how to pay for the item.

If the item is in print (or is a CD), you will be charged the current cost in print (or for the CD) or you will be offered the opportunity to buy a new replacement copy. Library staff will supply you with the ISBN (for books) or the EAN/UPC (for CDs) of the lost item which you should use to purchase the item from the retailer of your choice.

If the item is out or print (books only), then the following charges will apply:

  • £14.40 fiction hardback £14.79 from 1 April 2019
  • £17.14 non-fiction hardback 17.61 from 1 April 2019
  • £3.19 fiction and non-fiction paperback £3.28 from 1 April 2019

We cannot accept replacement DVDs due to our licensing agreements which allow us to rent DVDs to the public. You will be charged the purchase cost to the library service for lost DVDs which is more expensive than the retail price for these items.

Damaged items

If a damaged item can be repaired, you will not be charged for the item but this is at the discretion of library staff. If the item is damaged beyond repair, you will be offered the same options as if the item were lost.

Lost and damaged inter-library loans

If you have lost or damaged an inter-library loan item, the library service and the local authority the item has been loaned from will decide on an appropriate charge for the item. If the item has been loaned from the British Library this charge can be £150+.
