Primary school admissions

How primary school places were allocated for September 2019

Local Authority Community Schools, Voluntary Controlled Schools and Academy Schools

The Admissions Policy of the City Council in the event of over-subscription for Local Authority Community, Voluntary Controlled and Academy Primary Schools is:

All children with a statement of Special Educational Needs or Education, Health and Care Plan that name the school will be admitted before all other applicants.

  • Criteria 1: To children who, at the time of admission, are in the care of a Local Authority or are provided or are with accommodation by the Authority (looked after child). Also, children who were previously looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted, or became subject to a residence order or a special guardianship order. A looked after child is defined in Section 22 of the Children Act 1989.
  • Criteria 2: To children who live in the catchment area served by the school, who have a brother or sister attending the school or in the case of separate infant and junior schools, the corresponding junior school, provided that the brother or sister will continue to attend that school the following year;
  • Criteria 3: Other children who live in the catchment area served by the school;
  • Criteria 4: Children living outside the catchment area with a brother or sister who currently attends the school or in the case of separate infant and junior schools, the corresponding junior school, provided that the brother or sister will continue to attend that school the following year
  • Criteria 5: Children by reference to the distance to the preferred school.

If it was not possible to meet all the requests in any of the above categories the City Council has prioritise the requests by reference to the distance. A straight-line measurement has been made from the child's home address to the centre of the preferred school site. The address used must be the child's permanent home address. The shortest measurement has highest priority.

Oversubscribed schools

The table below shows the schools/academy that are oversubscribed and have not been able to admit all the children who requested places.

Applications are classified under the different criteria as outlined in the policy above e.g. criteria 3 relates to “children who live in the catchment area of a school/academy". The columns show how many children have been allocated under each criterion. The distance shown in Column 7 shows in miles the distance measured from the school/academy to the home address of the last child given a place.
