Death - registering

Where and when to register a death

A death must be registered in the district where it happened. If this is within the city of Coventry you can telephone to make an appointment to register at our office.

A death must be registered within five days. However, if the coroner is involved this period may be extended and he will tell you when to make your appointment.

If it is difficult to make an appointment at Coventry Register Office, you can make a declaration of death at any other register office in England and Wales.  The details will be sent to the right district and the death certificate posted to you. Please telephone us if you need more information.

Coventry Register Office operates an appointment system for the registration of deaths. We aim to see people within at least 10 minutes of their appointment time. Please telephone us to make your appointment. You may not register the death unless the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death has been issued to you or you have been told that the post mortem information is already at this office. You will need to bring the Medical Certificate with you when you see the Registrar if a post mortem has not been held.
