Business Rates - general information

Business Rates, or "non-domestic rates" as the Government refers to them, are collected by local authorities.  They are the means by which businesses and other organisations that occupy non-domestic (commercial) property make a contribution towards the cost of local services.

Business Rates are collected by local authorities, then pooled by central government and re-distributed to local authorities according to the number of people living in the area.  This money, together with revenue from Council Tax payers, revenue support grant provided by the Government and certain other smaller sources of revenue, is used to pay for the services provided by your local authority.
