Death - registering

Out of hours bereavement service

When someone dies, the whole family and community is touched by the sadness of bereavement. For those communities who, due to religious and cultural reasons require the funeral to be dealt with as soon as possible this distress can be acute, especially when the death occurs at a weekend or a bank holiday.

Our out of hours bereavement service guide is intended to help those communities who may have to arrange a funeral in these circumstances. It is also intended as a guide for the agencies involved of the need for co-ordination, sensitivity and above all urgency.

It deals with the release of the body from the hospital, the pre-registration of the death procedure, the involvement (if appropriate) of the Coroner, the possible repatriation of the body and of course the burial.

In practice, the Coventry communities who will mainly benefit from such an arrangement are the Muslim and Jewish communities. However, these arrangements are not exclusive to those communities and may be made available to anyone if a request is made.
