Introduction

Coventry 's growing automotive and aerospace industries have an enviable reputation for design, innovation and competitiveness.

Not only is Coventry a major design and engineering centre and key supplier of automotive components it has become a leader in the development and understanding of low carbon vehicles. Companies such as Jaguar Landrover, Tata Motors, Penso, Evida Power, Bladson Jets are amongst many working on low carbon projects.

The City also has great strength in the aerospace supply chain with compaines such as Arrowsmith, Lightning Areospace and PowerKut working together to provide high quality cost effective solutions as the Coventry and Warwickshire Aerospace Forum (CWAF).

Low Carbon Vehicles and their fuelling systems

  • In the late 1990s the Council established its electric vehicle pool car fleet and bought 10 electric Peugeot 106 vans under the European FP5 Themie Zeus Project. It now has 45 low carbon vehicles as part of its fleet.
  • The Council is a founder member of the CABLED consortium which trialed 110 electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuelled cars. As part of that programme the city has 24 electric charging stations in public places and has a hydrogen refuelling station at Coventry University 's Technocentre.
  • Coventry also has ground breaking fast charging capability ready to support the country's first all electric bus service

Going forward:

  • Plugged-In Midlands (PiM) combines the roll-out of electric vehicle infrastructure with the development of regional capabilities associated with the electrification of road transport. Over the next two years grants of up to 60% of installation costs are available to those organisations installing charging points
  • The Business Team is working with Coventry University and others to identify, demonstrate and introduce intelligent transport and low carbon mobility facilities as part of its future cities agenda
