Families can claim up to 15 hours of Universal Entitlement per week, for their 3 or 4 year old child. Every child is entitled to a maximum of 570 hours of funding per year, to be taken over no fewer than 38 weeks in any year. Children become eligible for an early education place from the start of the term after their third birthday.
Children can access their 3 and 4 year old early education place through any provider that is registered with the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) and the Local Authority (LA). Early years providers include nurseries, playgroups/pre-schools, childminders and children centres.
You can start claiming the Universal Entitlement the term after your child turns 3. The date you can claim will depend on when their birthday is.
|Child’s birthday:||When you can claim:|
|1 January and 31 March||the start of the summer term following their third birthday|
|1 April and 31 August||the start of the autumn term following their third birthday|
|1 September and 31 December||the start of the spring term following their third birthday|
The 3 and 4 year funding guidance document gives more details of the entitlement and explains how families can access a place for their child.
