Wireless internet hotspots

Free access to Library Wireless HotSpots at Central Library, Bell Green Community Library, Foleshill Community Library and Willenhall Community Library for you to use your laptop computer.

Library HotSpots, what you need to connect:

  1. A wireless enabled (Wi-Fi 802.11b or 802.11g) device -
    This could be a laptop or PDA and may already have WLAN capability built in (such as Intel Centrino) or an added Wi-Fi card (PCMCIA card for a laptop or Compact Flash card for a PDA). If not, you can purchase a Wi-Fi card from most major computer stores.
  2. Web Browser - you can use any standard Internet ready browser or any operating system. No additional software is required.

How to get connected:

  1. Launch your browser during your visit to any of our wireless sites, insert any web address and you will be directed to the Library HotSpot web page.
  2. If you are already a Library member, enter your Library ID number and PIN. If you do not have Library membership, please see a member of staff within the Library on how to become a Library member or obtain Guest credentials to allow access to the Library Wi-Fi HotSpot.
  3. Once your details have been verified, your browser will display the website you originally requested. You are now connected.

Please note that your connection time may be limited and that download limits may also be in place. You may also be disconnected at any time without notice by Library Staff.

By using the Library HotSpot service you agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions or Acceptable Use Policy, these can be viewed online during your connection.

1. Confirm your SSID setting

To confirm your SSID setting, follow these steps:

a. Click on Start
b. Go to Control Panel. Choose Network Connections
d. Highlight and right click on your Wireless Network Connection. Choose Properties from the menu.
e. Highlight the Wireless Networks tab.
f. The network SSID ''covlib'' should be visible under the Available Networks section. Ensure that the Data Encryption (WEP Enabled) option is not selected, as our HotSpot service is a public service.

2. Obtain an IP address

Ensure the following options are not selected:
* Automatically detect settings
* Use automatic configuration script
* Use a proxy server for your LAN

Click OK to confirm

Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically and click OK to confirm.

3. Configure Microsoft Internet Explorer

Open your browser and go the Tools menu.
Select Internet Options and the tab Connections
Under LAN Settings open the window for Local Area Network (LAN) settings

Ensure the following options are not selected:
* Automatically detect settings
* Use automatic configuration script
* Use a proxy server for your LAN

Click OK to confirm.
