Community Support Grant

From 1 April 2013, the Department of Work and Pensions have abolished the discretionary social fund payments system. These cover:

  • Crisis Loans - These are designed to meet, or to help meet an immediate short term needs in either in an emergency or as a result of a disaster. 
  • Community Care Grants - These are designed to help or to help vulnerable people live as independent life in the community.

You can apply for a community support grant if:

  • You are in extreme financial difficulties
  • There is a risk to the health and safety of you and/or your family and
  • There is no other help available to you

The scheme will seek to assist you in meeting your needs for subsistence, or your immediate, short-term priority needs. You could also receive help if you require assistance to maintain your independence within the community. You will have to meet an eligibility criteria and awards will be made by way of a spend card, voucher or arrangement of services. No cash payments will be made.

Community Support Grants are awarded in accordance with Council Policy and on applicants demonstrating that they meet the necessary criteria. We reserves the right to suspend/withdraw grants where it suspects an applicant has provided false information and/or is using grants for purposes other than those set out in the application/Council Policy. The Council reserves the right to take appropriate action to recover grants and/or report suspected criminal activity to the Police. Read the full policy.
