Council tax exemptions

Unoccupied property

Changes to the amount of Council Tax to be charged for empty properties came in in April 2013. These followed a change in the law which meant that the amount of Council Tax to be paid can be varied.

The changes mean that when a property becomes empty and unfurnished full Council Tax charge will be payable. The bill will be increased by 50% when a property has been empty for two years or more. This will mean that Council Tax will be charged at a rate of 150%.

Also, a full Council Tax charge must be paid immediately for empty properties that are having repair work.
