Functional skills maths classes

How much will the course cost?

Nothing. Functional Skills maths courses are funded by the Government.

Where will the course be?

We run classes all across the city (17 different venues in total). We can usually find a class at a venue to suit you.

When will the course be?

We run classes during the school term times. This academic year our term dates will be:

  • Autumn - Mon 17 Sept - Fri 14 Dec (12 weeks) (Half term 22 Oct - 26 Oct)
  • Spring - Mon 7 Jan - Fri 5 April (12 weeks) (Half term 18 Feb - 22 Feb)
  • Summer - Mon 29 April - Fri 12 July (10 weeks) (Half term 27 May - 31 May)

You can enrol on a class at any time during the year.

Classes are one session per week and we have them available every weekday.

  • Morning classes are from 9:15 until 11:45.
  • Afternoon classes are from 12:30 until 3:00.
  • Evening classes are from 6:30 until 9:00.

Do you offer childcare?

We have a crèche service available at some venues. If you need crèche, let us know when you enrol and we will do our best to find you a suitable class.

Do I need to be good at maths?

No!

It doesn’t matter what standard your maths is, we can help! We accommodate anything from absolute beginners up to GCSE level in our Functional Skills classes.

Are there any other entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements, but your English needs to be good enough that you can understand what is being said in class and can read the exam paper. We recommend that you should have English at Entry Level 3 or above.

Will I get a qualification?

Yes.

We offer 5 levels of Functional Skills maths qualifications.

The least difficult is Entry Level 1, which is aimed at people with no maths at all.

The most challenging is Level 2, which is classed as equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (what used to be a Grade C).

How do I sign up?

To make sure we get you signed up to the right class, we need to meet you for an assessment. At the assessment we will answer any questions you might have, find out what level of maths you are starting from and then find a class that meets your needs.

To arrange an assessment or if you have a question:

  • Telephone: 024 7683 2100
  • Email: mathsclasses@coventry.gov.uk - please tell us what area of the city you live in and what times of day you are available for an assessment.

What do I need to bring with me to the assessment?

You will need to prove your identity and eligibility criteria. To do this we need to see some ID.

  • If you were born in the UK please bring your birth certificate, driving license or passport.
  • If you are an EU citizen please bring your passport/ID card
  • Otherwise, please bring your residents permit, passport with visa or whatever documentation you have that shows your resident status.

We will also need your National Insurance Number.

This isn’t the course I’m looking for. What other maths courses do you offer?

We also offer GCSE maths courses.
