Approved food premises

Once your application is received, an officer from the food safety team will contact you to arrange a visit to the premises, and discuss the approval process. They will determine whether all of your systems, procedures and documentation meet the food hygiene requirements.

Once your business is approved, your establishment will be issued with a unique approval number. This is a standard identification mark which must be applied to all of your products and documentation. If you require help with the requirements of food labelling, you should contact our Trading Standards Team.

Your food business will then be subject to regular, unannounced inspections, to ensure that you are complying with the legislation. After each inspection, a written report will be provided with details of any issues that need to be addressed.

How long will it take to process my application

It is a legal requirement that the approval process is completed, and approval obtained, before starting to trade. There are no targets set for application turnaround.
