There are advantages and disadvantages to renting a home from a private landlord rather than a social landlord.

The advantages may be that:

  • You can move in quickly
  • The housing may be in an area you want to be in
  • The house may be furnished
  • the tenancy period may match the student terms or temporary contracts
  • The range of choice available from family home to a bed-sit

The disadvantages are that:

  • The contract may only be for six months and you will have no right to stay after that
  • Most landlords will want a deposit before the tenancy starts
  • Your landlord may want a reference
  • The rent may be higher than for a Housing Association property
