Reading in the park

Thursday 18 August 2011

A free outdoor summer book reading event is set to take place in Coventry next week.

Set in the beautiful and historic grounds of Coombe Country Park, the Council has joined forces with local radio station Mercia, to offer families an opportunity to bring their children and grandchildren along to the park and listen to their favourite books being read by popular presenter Andy Goulding and the Mercia Street Stars.

Called 'Reading in the Park - enjoy the latest summer reads in the beautiful Coombe Country Park', the free event runs from 10.00am to 3.00pm next Wednesday, 24 August in the events field at the park. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic and their rugs and join in the fun on a summer's day.

A number of popular children's favourites will be chosen to be the stars of the day including stories by Roald Dahl, Susan Carpenter and the current high profile Horrid Henry stories.

Carl Bainbridge, the Council's Marketing and Communications Manager, said: "With the summer holidays now in full swing I'm sure many parents and carers are constantly looking at ways to keep their children and grandchildren entertained during the holiday.

"We decided to combine the enjoyment of an outdoor book read with the lovely setting of Coombe, so that people can enjoy a combination of family friendly activity.

"The added excitement is that Mercia will be bringing their popular presenter Andy Goulding along to read from some popular summer books and bring his own unique style to the day."

Andy Goulding will be reading between 1.00pm and 3.00pm, whilst other Mercia promotional staff and library staff will also be on hand from 10.00am to read stories.

Mercia presenter, Andy Goulding, added: "There are some amazing children's stories around and I'm looking forward to reading from a mixture of some true classics and modern day tales.

"It will be fun to bring these stories to life and share some of my favourites with you all. I just hope that my Gruffalo impression is up to scratch. See you there!"

Although the event is free, normal car park charges will apply at Coombe Country Park.
