A series of city centre overnight road closures have been scheduled to begin next week – Sunday 15 November.
The closures will be in place predominantly for resurfacing and re-lining, and will be among the final pieces of work carried out by Coventry City Council as part of a series of improvement works on and surrounding Lidice Place, Corporation Street, Belgrade Plaza, Upper Well Street, Fairfax Street and Trinity Street.
There will also be some minor changes to the layout on Fairfax Street, with the addition of new ‘splitter islands’ and work is continuing on new pedestrian crossing points, kerbing and paving.
Cllr Rachel Lancaster, Cabinet Member for Public Services said:
“We’re now reaching the final few phases of improvement works that have been taking place and, together, they will help us to improve road layouts and pedestrian safety, journey times and the overall appearance of the whole area.
"This is the final push with this work now and I know there has been a lot going on - but we have been so successful in securing external funding to allow us to do it all, meaning it all had to be done within strict timescales – so I’d ask everyone to just bear with us for a little while longer as we head towards completion.
“We‘ve also done everything we can to schedule these essential closures carefully, in order to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum and that’s why the majority of work is taking place overnight".
Closures around Lidice Place, Belgrade Plaza, Corporation Street, Queen Victoria Road and Upper Well Street will be split across a two week period on the following dates:
Lidice Place / Spon Street (entry) / Corporation Street / Queen Victoria Road
• Monday 16 - Thursday 19 November: 7pm – midnight
Belgrade Plaza / Corporation Street / Upper Well Street
• Sunday 22 - Thursday 26 November: 7pm – midnight
• Sunday 29 November: 7pm - midnight
During the daytime on these dates, some preparation work will be taking place with traffic management in place.
Work on Fairfax Street / Whittle Arch will be done in two phases:
Phase One - Excavation of the road to install new splitter islands, one directly outside Sainsburys and three along Fairfax Street.
• Sunday 15 - Friday 20 November (inclusive): 11:30pm - 5am
Phase Two - road resurfacing works, to include planing, resurfacing and re-lining of Fairfax Street and through to Trinity Street and at Whittle Arch
• Monday 23 - Friday 27 November (inclusive): 11:30pm - 5am
There are also overnight road closures in both directions from 8pm - 5:30am on the Ring Road - from Junction 1 to 3 - scheduled for three nights from 15 - 17 November to allow for installation of new high mast lighting columns. The Ring Road will be accessible from slip roads in both directions to minimise disruption.
