Holyhead Road Improvements – works start at Barras Lane junction
Tuesday 11 October 2011
Coventry City Council is set to start the next phase of work to improve Holyhead Road.
The work is part of a comprehensive package of improvements that includes upgrading traffic lights and pedestrian crossings and repairs to roads, pavements and verges. Work is also underway to replace every single one of the street lights on this main and well used route into the city centre.
This phase covers the section from the ring road to Northumberland Road. The work will include a major change to the layout of the Barras Lane junction to improve the facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The pedestrian crossing near Minster Road will also be changed to incorporate the latest technology.
The remaining five sets of lights along the road will also be upgraded thanks to a grant from the Department for Transport for improving traffic lights across the West Midlands.
Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: "Holyhead Road is one of our main routes into the city and this package of improvements will help to improve safety for all road users and keep traffic moving into and out of the city.
However, because of the narrowness of the road at the Barras Lane junction, in order to carry out these works as quickly and as safely as possible, it will be necessary to close this section of Holyhead Road to traffic from Sunday 16 October for three weeks. Motorists will therefore need to use diversion routes along Allesley Old Road and Radford Road, both of which will be clearly signposted."
